Organising a visit to the Ile Nouvelle

Organise a tour

Practical details

Access to the Ȋle Nouvelle is offered in half-day slots with or without a picnic lunch on site.

The island has the capacity to accommodate 90-100 people at any one time.

The Conseil Général offers two ways to organise a trip to the island:

- a free tour supervised by the seasonal nature guides of the département (from the end of June until mid September exclusively).
- by independently negotiating a tour with an organisation providing guides which are qualified to deliver the subject matter

Whichever option you choose, the service provider must organise tours which comply with the conditions outlined below:

Insurance

The provider agrees to take out compulsory insurance (personal and professional liability) to cover all activities linked with the organisation of the tour, including transport and the tour itself.

If the service provider will not be providing transport they must ensure that the transport provider has the necessary skills and insurance cover required to carry out the activity, and that all conditions ensuring the safety of visitors are met.

Tour content

The provider agrees to provide tours delivered by a guide who is qualified in the subject matter and to present both the environmental and architectural aspects of the island.

The provider agrees to present in a clear manner, the action of the Conservatoire du Littoral and Conseil Général in the restoration, ecological management, scientific monitoring and opening of the island to the public.

The provider agrees to provide the département with an assessment of the action undertaken on the site, at the end of the year.

The département reserves the right to partake in the tours, in order to ensure the appropriate functioning of the opening of the site to the public.

Site regulations

On-site access and boundaries

Only the Sans Pain Sud area of the Ȋle Nouvelle is open to the public; the North and Bouchaud areas are inaccessible.

The accessible areas of the Ȋle Nouvelle are visibly outlined in order to uphold protective and preventative measures to accommodate the public on the island.

Accordingly, only the village, its immediate surroundings and the South embankment may be visited during tours.

The organisation operating the tour agrees to run the tour within the boundaries of this area. In the event that this does not occur, the site management will not be liable.

Prohibited actions and activities

The following actions and activities are forbidden on site:

  • Fires
  • Camping
  • Bicycles and mountain bikes
  • Dropping litter - the provision of waste management is not provided on the site; therefore any litter from picnics should be brought back and disposed of on the mainland.
  • To ensure the level of peace required by the fauna of a protected natural site is upheld, we ask you to refrain from making excess noise
  • Hunting is only permitted in the area surrounding the island (under strict regulation)
  • Fishing
  • Picking and eating plants on all areas of the site
  • Dogs are not permitted on the island even if kept on a lead, for reasons connected with the tranquillity of the site and wild fauna, and the safety of both the public and departmental employees.
